ScamZapper
What websites should I report?
ScamZapper is not an ad blocker, so please don't report ads. ScamZapper is designed to block a particular variety of Safari pop-up scam that has been on the rise. These pop-ups having the following characteristics:

  • They claim your computer has a virus or that you have committed a crime. They typically start out with "Suspicious activity detected" or "your computer has a virus or firewall issue"
  • They want you to call a toll-free (1-800 or 1-888 in the U.S.) number
  • Clicking "OK" or "Cancel" just brings the pop-up back indefinitely
    • Please do not report pop-ups that can be easily dismissed, i.e. "you've won a prize" pop-ups. Ad blockers will usually take care of those

An example pop-up is shown below.

Please refrain from reporting:
  • Sites that do not meet the above criteria
  • Duplicate sites
  • Sites that are already blocked
  • Using an outdated version of ScamZapper (as the site you're reporting may be blocked in a newer version)

Deauthorization list
In order to keep our focus on the type of scam listed above, we may rescind access to scam reporting if you report sites that do not meet the above criteria. From the main ScamZapper FAQ page: "If you report irrelevant sites, your identifier may be placed on a deauthorization list. We know that accidents happen, and you might not be aware of what to report. That's why we have two levels of deauthorization lists. On the first level, you only need to review the criteria for scams that you should report, and then you should regain the ability to report. This allows us to focus only on the scam websites that we are targeting." Please the the "Unique Report Identifier" answer on the main ScamZapper FAQ page for more information.
